"Sea" Through Cetacean: STEAM Student Ambassador Programme

Date: 02/02/2026

Organised by the Division of Science of Lingnan University in collaboration with the Cetacea Research Institute and the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong, The year‑long programme "Sea Through Cetacean: STEAM Student Ambassador Programme & Cetacean Conservation Exhibition" officially launched this month. Our 19 student ambassadors have been granted a rare opportunity to work with the remains of a Longman's beaked whale—one of the world’s most mysterious cetacean species, first recorded in the wild only in 2003.

Under professional guidance, our students will gain immersive, hands‑on experience in the delicate specimen‑preparation process. Notably, our school team is responsible for monitoring and recording the preparation of 10 rib bones from the whale. Through this specialised STEAM learning, students will bridge the gap between classroom theory and real‑world scientific conservation, ensuring the skeleton is ready for public exhibition in 2027. This unique experience allows our students to contribute directly to Hong Kong's marine heritage and to advocate for the protection of our oceans.
